Why Yahoo Mail is still around
Yahoo Mail launched on October 8, 1997, built on technology Yahoo acquired when it bought Four11 and its RocketMail service for $92 million in stock. It existed seven years before Gmail. So why do people still use it?
Mostly because an address you've had since college is genuinely hard to walk away from. Your bank has it. Your old colleagues have it. 200 dormant accounts list it as the recovery address. Inertia is underrated.
That creates a specific headache. If your Yahoo address is now your personal or legacy inbox while your real work happens in Gmail or Outlook, you're checking two places, and one of them you barely trust. Anything genuinely urgent that lands in Yahoo has a decent chance of sitting there for a week.

Hit your email storage limit, and Yahoo stops delivering mail. Messages sent to you while you're full aren't held or recoverable. Not a warning. A hard stop.
The free tier is ad-supported, which is the actual tradeoff for the storage bump you get over some competitors. Yahoo Mail Plus is what removes the ads, not just what adds space. Beyond that, the feature set is unremarkable in a fine way: folders, filters, a calendar, attachment previews, and standard spam filtering. One feature that is worth knowing about is disposable email addresses. Yahoo lets you generate throwaway aliases tied to your main account, useful for sign-ups you don't fully trust, which is a step most competitors don't offer natively.
Yahoo also supports two-factor authentication, which you should absolutely turn on given how often Yahoo addresses show up in old breach dumps.
Is Yahoo Mail safe to use?
Reasonably, if you've locked it down, but it's worth knowing what "locked down" is compensating for. Yahoo disclosed that a 2013 breach ultimately compromised all 3 billion of its accounts, still the largest breach on record, on top of a separate 2014 incident affecting 500 million users. Old Yahoo credentials are accordingly common in breach dumps circulating today.
None of that means your current Yahoo account is compromised. It means an account this old has had more chances to be caught up in something, which is the actual argument for two-factor authentication and a password you're not reusing anywhere else.
How to use Yahoo Mail in another email client
Yahoo Mail supports IMAP, so you're not stuck using yahoo.com or the mobile app to read it. To connect it elsewhere, you'll need Yahoo's IMAP settings (imap.mail.yahoo.com, port 993, SSL) and, in most cases, a third-party app password generated from your Yahoo account security settings rather than your normal login password. Yahoo requires this for most external mail apps when two-factor authentication is on.
Once that's set up, a Yahoo inbox behaves like any other IMAP account, which means you can fold it into a client like Spark alongside your Gmail or Outlook accounts instead of keeping it in its own tab out of habit.

The short version: Yahoo's free tier lands in between the two on storage (20 GB, versus 15 GB pooled across Gmail/Drive/Photos and 15 GB for Outlook.com), and it's the only one of the three with ads on every free plan by default.
